The Wild Within Reach
Turning everyday nature into art, writing, and a year of quiet discovery
All about the Zine project
This little zine grew out of muddy boots, early mornings, and years spent watching birds closely - first as a wildlife rehabilitator, and always as an artist. I paint primarily birds in gouache on pH-treated, upcycled tea bags, layering observation with collage and quiet attention. Printed in my home studio in Rogue River, Oregon, this monthly zine is an extension of that practice - small, doable, and rooted in real places. Each issue includes a Bird of the Month, a simple outdoor spot to observe all month long, color tracking, writing prompts, and open pages for whatever medium feels good in your hands. This is not an art test. It’s not a nature exam. It’s a short, repeatable ritual you can actually keep up with. A gentle invitation to step outside and notice what is already happening near you. We’re here to watch one patch of the world change - together. There are no impossible tasks here. No elaborate field expeditions. Just a handful of approachable pages designed to fit into real life - five minutes in the yard, a quick color swatch, a short note about the sky. Month by month, almost without noticing, the pages begin to gather. And at the end of twelve issues, you may find yourself surprised to discover you’ve created a full year of observation - ready to be tucked into a simple binding cover and kept as a record of your place and your season. Just attention, curiosity, and a few blank pages waiting to hold what you find.
Welcome to the wild within reach.
